What is a Ward?
A ward is a person for whom a guardian has been appointed.
An adult who has diminished mental ability to function in society can be referred to the Lawrence County Guardianship Services Program. At LCGSP, our concern is to determine the least restrictive alternative for the adult being referred. It is important to allow every individual to maintain rights in this society whenever possible.
Once referred, an assessment of the adult will be made to determine needs and all possible alternatives. After a thorough evaluation, if it is determined the referred adult needs guardianship services, only then will a petition to the court for guardianship be entered.
What conditions might cause diminished mental ability in an adult?
There are various reasons why some adults have an inability to make sound cognitive decisions and may need a guardian on a temporary or permanent basis. |

Why does a Ward need a trained Volunteer Guardian?
The duties of the Volunteer Guardian vary depending on what is determined by the court. Guardianship is a legal process, utilized when a person can no longer make or communicate safe or sound decisions about his/her person and/or property or has become susceptible to fraud or undue influence.
Guardianship is not the role of caregiver, but to advocate on behalf of the ward to ensure proper care and enhance the ward’s lifestyle while making every attempt to included them in the decision-making process as much as possible. |
